Som Sig Bör I & II — Original Diptych
Description
Two Gustavian armchairs. Two prinsesstårtor. One whole, one open. Som Sig Bör I & II is the first diptych from Series IV — the furniture series of the
Studio Grön collection. Each painting depicts a grey-white carved Gustavian fauteuil upholstered in deep cobalt blue velvet. On the seat of each chair sits Swedish princess cake: in the first painting, whole and intact; in the second, with a slice removed to reveal the layers within — cream, sponge, raspberry jam.
The title, Som Sig Bör, is a Swedish expression meaning "as it should be" — propriety, correctness, everything in its right place. The Gustavian style is Sweden's aristocratic interior language, the furniture of those who once administered power over common lives. The prinsesstårta — Sweden's most democratic cake, born in a palace kitchen and given to everyone — takes its seat without explanation or apology.
